This is my favourite shot from the Stolen Girlfriends Club Autumn/Winter 2012 campaign.

All Images/Derek Henderson for Stolen Girlfriends Club.

About 20 minutes ago the new Stolen Girlfriends Club Autumn/Winter 2012 campaign imagery was presented to me, I came across this shot and had to share it with you. It’s my favourite of the lot. There are several reasons for this:

  • Firstly, I really like cornflakes. Well, I don’t really eat cereal that often (read: at all) but if I were to choose any cereal in the world as my favourite, it would probably be cornflakes. They might be boring, but with a bit of sugar sprinkled on top they can really be quite delightful. But I digress. I like that they’ve used cornflakes.
  • Secondly, the cornflakes are Homebrand. Extra points for this.
  • Thirdly, we all know I think Georgia Fowler is a fecking good model, and  it was shot by Derek Henderson and we all know Derek Henderson is my favourite New Zealand photographer.
  • Fourthly, there’s just so much going on in this photo. It’s just so damn interesting, there’s a tonne of things to look at and it’s just kind of refreshing to see a campaign image that isn’t super clean and minimalist.
  • Fifthly, there’s something nice about how Stolen Girlfriends Club has their brand guidelines down. They have amazing marketing skills and there’s no doubt these photos fit in perfectly with their target audience. They know the kind of image to present and they stick with it and that’s what makes them incredibly successful. High fives for that.

Huffer’s Spring/Summer 2011-2012 Coming Attraction campaign is the best thing since sliced bread.

All Images/huffer.co.nz

Have any of you seen any of these shots yet? They’re from the new Huffer Spring/Summer 2011-2012, ‘Coming Attraction’ campaign and I love them a lot. I am not one to gush over campaign shots that often, but I do think that this one is worth mentioning. After seeing so many shiny, perfect, airbrushed campaigns, it’s refreshing to see something with a little grit.

The model choice is perfect – they’ve used Alyssa (62 Models), Tia (Clyne) and Kitty (Red Eleven) who are all beautiful girls and fantastic models (and I think Alyssa is definitely one to watch) – and combined them with a couple of edgy boys (Jimmy Mac and Isaac from N Model Management). They go well together and it all just looks so natural to me. The sun, the setting, the candid expressions. It really sells the brand to me. Well done Huffer.

Note: In semi-related news, Huffer is expanding and has opened a new store on Nuffield Street. It’s open for business this week so make sure you check it out for this new summer collection – that denim jacket on Alyssa (above) and the white pleat front, sleeveless dress on Tia (fifth photo below)? Amazing.

Things I want from Vogue’s Online Shopping Night.

Various things I'll be looking out for during the VOSN. L-R Top: Ginger & Smart, Karen Walker x 2 (available at Maximillia), Kate Sylvester, Dion Lee (available at My Catwalk). L-R Bottom: Manning Cartell, Alice McCall, Ginger & Smart, Kate Sylvester. All Images/via respective designers.

What are you planning on doing tonight? If you are anything like me and you usually spend your Wednesday evenings either tucked up infront of the telly and bored to tears, or tucked up infront of your laptop and bored to tears, 1. I feel your pain, and 2. have no fear, I have the answer to your Wednesday night restlessness: online shopping. More specifically, the Vogue Online Shopping Night (VOSN).

“Whatttt?”, you ask. “What you talkin’ ’bout?” Let me tell you. From 5:00pm Australian time (7:00pm New Zealand time) today, a whole bunch of local and international brands are going on an online sale frenzy for the VOSN. I’m talking all sorts of online shopping deals (discounts, gifts with purchase, free shipping etc), from all sorts of amazing brands (Alice McCall, Kate Sylvester, Therese Rawsthorne etc) for one night only.

The list of deals is pretty long and it would be ridiculous for me to write about them all here, but these are my picks of the bunch:

  • Kate Sylvester: 30% off Winter 2011 stock. Hop onto her e-store, here. (That purple sweater above? That is MINE.)
  • Alice McCall: Liked the look of her frocks at RAFW? Get your own piece of McCall from her online shop. She’s got 40% off full-price Winter stock, and an additional 20% off already reduced items.
  • Manning Cartell: Grab that cardigan (bottom left) at a bargain tonight, because all Manning Cartell’s Winter 2011 stock is 30% off.
  • Want to get your hands on some cheap(er) Karen Walker? (or Lonely Hearts, Twenty-Seven Names etc) Hop on to Maximillia. They’ve got  30% all full price stock and you get a free piece of Karen Walker for Sretsis jewellery with your order. (Enter promotional code: VOGUE at the checkout.)
  • MyCatwalk.com has got a deal for those of you who have trouble making quick decisions. Want that Dion Lee dress above? Can’t decide? They’ve got 50% off vouchers valid for full priced items, 3 months from issue. (Enter promotional code: VOGUE at the checkout.)

None of those take your fancy? For the full list of deals, check here. Happy Shopping!

Three ways to spend your money this weekend (in Auckland).

  1. Juliet Stimpson is having a ‘Stoop Sale‘ on Saturday, from 11:00am – 4:00pm at St Kevin’s Arcade (just down the stairs, past the Wine Cellar). What’s a Stoop Sale, you ask? Well, it’s pretty much a garage sale, minus the garage and include the fact that she is only selling clothes. She tells me most of the stuff is vintage, and that everything is under $30, so go in to get a bargain! More details here, and a cute video of some of the things she’s selling, here.
  2. After stopping at the Stoop Sale, maybe you could take a stroll down Ponsonby Road. It’s the street’s monthly market day this Saturday, and everyone’s got specials on. Amongst others, Ruby are selling coloured keds for $30 and Juliette Hogan have specials and gift with purchases over $450. And if you’re feeling a little adventurous, Two Hands Tattoo are doing special Ponsonby themed tattoos for $80 – $100 each. More info on that and pictures of some of the designs available, here.
  3. Feeling charitable? Pop into The Department Store this Sunday from 10:00am – 4:00pm. All profit from the day will be going to the Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund and what’s more, there’ll be celebrities there on the sausage sizzle, Karen Walker and Dan Gosling (from Black Box) will be in store to help style customers, Simon James will be on hand to give design advice and Lucy Vincent-Marr and Stephen Marr will be on hand to beautify you!

No more stink gifts!

Image/qubicstore.com

There are a couple of reason that I had to post this.

  1. I think the actual Qubic Christmas Wish List idea is pretty cool, and
  2. The campaign image is of my brother in a dress. (Ha!)

Firstly, let’s address what everyone cares about the most – and that is the image. Two things to note:

Something Old: Kleinert’s Swim Caps Ad from 1962.

Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neider.

The first thing that pops to mind when I see this is ad is “oh my, does that really work?”

The second is, “how?!”

Something Old: Levi’s Ad from 1984.

Look! 1984 again! This time it’s a Levi’s ad. An illustrated Levi’s ad:

Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neide

I really like this as a piece of art. I’d hang it on my wall. My favourite part is the way that ‘Levi Strauss’ is formed in the water rings, and the zipper deck chair. So quirky. The girl’s expression is kind of creepy though, it looks like she’s plotting something.

And on a slightly unrelated note, those jeans look awesome. I’d like a pair that fit like that.

Proenza Schouler’s first ever ad campaign.

Images/www.proenzaschouler.com/shop

I love, love the image on the left. Her pose, her hair, her expression, those shoes, everything. It’s part of Proenza Schouler’s first ever ad campaign – which was released yesterday, and features one of my favourite girls, Tati Cotliar, and those twins – Anna and Kirby (cool name!) Kennedy. You can see the rest of the shots here.

Accompanying this campaign is a short behind the scenes look at the making of the ads (below). This video almost makes me feel better about the super cold temperatures of late. I’m loving the dark red stained lips and messy hair, the sleeveless button-up shirt, the hint of knitwear at the start. It almost, almost makes me want winter to last a littttlllle bit longer. Almost.

Something Old: L.A Gear Ad from 1988.

REMEMBER THESE?!!?!!

Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neider.

This ad kind of makes me feel like a milkshake.

This is the campaign image for NZFW.

When the curtain came off the giant print-out of this image at the New Zealand Fashion Week announcement yesterday afternoon, the crowd gave a collective head tilt. And not in that good way (if there is such thing as a good head tilt). A few surrounding me weren’t just head-tilting – they were brows-furrowed and frowning. We were told by New Zealand Fashion Week founder, Pieter Stewart, that the image was to celebrate and showcase New Zealand fashion and its talent.

It seemed that the overall concept was missed by most.

Something Old (and something new): Benetton Ads.

Another ad from the best year of all years! Gosh, doesn’t everyone look so… bright? So much energy! And everyone’s so happy in their sportswear. They’re loving it (especially the guy in the red tracksuit on the right), the kids are loving it, I’m loving it:

Not-so-accurate Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neider.

(Apologies for the not-so-good crop in the scan. The bit underneath the logo reads ‘Benetton has all the colors in the world’.)

And in related news, I thought it would be interesting to post some images from the fall 2010 campaign from the brand to compare:

Images/via thefashionisto.com

25 year’s later, the models are moodier, the colours aren’t as bright, they’ve gotten rid of the little ones and obviously the clothes have changed, but the whole ‘group-of-faces-from-different-places-and-different-races’ aesthetic is still there. (More below.)

Something Old: Vans Breakers from 1984.

1984. The year of the rat, the year that Transformers were introduced to the world, and the year that I was born. Another thing came out that year, and it was this:

Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neider.

Those breakers are the shizz! I wish I had them right now. And what about those dudes in the photo? The bandanas, the breakdancing. Amazing.

Something Old: Mallory Hats Ad from 1907.

Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neider.

Yesterday I had a lot of errands to run. Ones that involved leaving the house visiting multiple locations. I spent half the day ducking from shelter to shelter to avoid the rain.

Today I have hardly any errands to run, but the sun is shining like you wouldn’t believe.

Typical.

I think I’m in need of one of those bowler hats. Perfect for this crazy Auckland weather.

Something Old: Converse Ad from 1985.

“Limousines for your feet.”

Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neider.

Enough said.

Something Old: Wrangler Jeans Ad from 1966.

Scan/20th Century Fashion, by Jim Heimann and Alison A Neider.

How great is this? It’s 44 years old , but if you were to update the make-up and tweak the outfits just slightly, these girls could easily be walking down Ponsonby Road tomorrow. Seriously, how cyclical is fashion? So cyclical.

Actually, I wouldn’t mind a pair of those cream-coloured jeans right about now if I could get my hands on them.
